A Cuban affair
The first of James Bond’s suited looks within No Time to Die is his Evening Suit (Tuxedo) when Bond meets with Paloma in Cuba, who provides him with it. From TOM FORD, a black shawl collared Atticus evening suit, an Evening Shirt, this batwing bow tie, and a Silk Pocket Square. In addition, Bond is wearing black braces from TM Lewin and Crocket & Jones Highbury shoes.
Bond wears the bow tie all the way through the SPECTRE party and throughout the subsequent firefight afterwards, extracting Valdo Obruchev, all the way to boarding Nomi’s seaplane, where he then unties and removes it.
A black-tie event
Since the premiere of No Time to Die I’ve not had any occasions to wear my evening suit. And since then, I’ve acquired two more bow ties. One of which is the TOM FORD bow tie seen in No Time to Die. I was hoping to wear this bow tie at the premiere, pairing it with its partner of the TOM FORD Evening shirt.
However due to work commitments I wasn’t able to get to the TOM FORD store in London in time, so I wore the Turnbull & Asser Casino Royale bow tie instead.
The day after
The next day I left my hotel and walked for around an hour to get to Sloane Street carrying my evening attire from the previous night, and my Navy TOM FORD Prince of Wales suit to be completed (cuff buttons to be added and trousers to be hemmed).
While I was there, I also picked up the NTTD BOW tie, I was also shown the cummerbund that accompanied it, but as it didn’t make an appearance in the film, I didn’t get it, although now unavailable I do regret that decision. So, I now have the bow tie, but no wear to wear it!
With the exception of a few photos, I took for the shirt review it had remained on my tie rack waiting for the time when a black-tie event would next appear.
Many months later
It finally got an outing last October for the Q the Music extravaganza at the O2 in London.
And as part of this event Thomas Felix Creighton and I arranged a little get together with other Bond fans which we called ‘Albion is Not Enough’. We travelled from the MI6 headquarters in London to the 02 alongside, and on the river Thames.
For the event Thomas said he would be wearing his Evening Suit, so I decided to join him. Wearing the NTTD shirt with the NTTD bow tie. The tie is quite thick, compare to the T&A ones that I have, however it ties beautifully, once adjusted to the correct collar size to ties really easily, and looks fantastic.
It surprises me how easy it is to do up, I’ve been tying bow ties since I was 17 going to my schools sixth form prom, and as there have been gaps between needing black tie I can get a little rusty remembering how to do one up, but it does comes back to you.
But with this it just seemed to tie itself, I can’t explain how. It still needs a little adjusting now and then, as it’s not a pre tied number, but I think (as do many) that makes it look better as it’s not so exact. But the entire day, and night it looked really on point, and great for being on the move.
I’m also a fan of the batwing look; I have a T&A one which I got to match with the one Connery wore between From Russia with Love to Thunderball. I just love the way the bow forms with it.
This is my first (and only) TOM FORD bow tie, should a tie project with TOM FORD come about again and there was any possibility on the Quantum and Skyfall bow ties being made available I’d be very interested. But following the completion of the Quantum tie project it is not looking likely with the new leadership. But I’m hopeful that these might start again.
This tie is no longer available, I asked some time ago for a friend, probably discontinued with the rest of the NTTD collection. But if you do find one, and it’s a good price I’d recommend getting it, I think the style suits most black-tie arrangements and at the end of the night, when appropriate it does look cool undone with the top button of your shirt undone!
