Hannibal S1, Ep3 – Potage
Costume Designer: Christopher Hargadon
This is the first time we see Hannibal layers for winter and for ‘field work’ in anything other than blazers and V-Neck knits. He is proving that he is more than a one trick pony by employing some check 2-button overcoats, a 3/4 length chesterfield 3 button and zipped henleys or zip through bombers.
Personal favourite
My favourite is the chequered woollen coat with navy blues and browns. (Above and Below). It’s perfect for the autumnal winter look and because the overcoat is reminiscent of his chequered suit jackets with the slanted pockets, ticket pockets and barchetta breast pocket, it very much looks like his natural wardrobe has swelled mildly to suit the cooler climate.
On duty
Dr. Hannibal Lecter played by Mads Mikkelsen, informs us this is not to be mistaken for a regular suit jacket by not wearing a pocket square and closing the second button. A common faux pas for some men wearing standard two button suit jackets.
Hannibal also pairs this and another checked overcoat with a blue and red zipped through cashmere knit sweater by Maurizio Baldassari. He pops the collar on both, allowing space for his shirt and tie to come through. Hannibal wants to let his audience know he is very much on duty, professionally and sartorially.
Home visit
In an earlier scene he adopts a more accessible and warmer 3/4 length chesterfield coat which we first see Hannibal carry to the home of Abigail. (Below)
Great outdoors
At first I wanted to compare this to the one Daniel Craig wears as James Bond in Spectre when he visit’s M’s office. However, that has a fly placket and this has a traditional placket with buttons on show.
Compared to Bond
Bond’s looks to be more cinched and in typical Craig style, more snug with shorter sleeves and without the ticket pocket. So probably nothing like Hannibal’s once you start to study it. But from afar, like really afar..
