Episode 72

Minute 83 –

Take aways – this is peak Bond, just battered, nursing his wounds, taking a drink to calm his nerves. And then giving himself a real hardened stair in the mirror. There is a real silence also, no music, no dialogue, just heavy breathing, very intimate. Shows him, as vulnerable, alone. Also very alone. He doesn’t have a partner, Mathis is not holding his hand, Felix isn’t Felix yet. But its a look that says ‘with each kill, he is getting slightly immune to it all’. Dryden, Fisher, Demetrius he even smiles at Carlos getting blown up with a bomb stuck to his arse.

This is a different kind of kill. And then we have him having a little fun with Le Chiffre. Le Chiffre notices that Bond has had a costume change and has remarked on his shirt.

And Bond has a quippy comeback about the derangement of the tear duct, ‘I won’t be worried until I’m weeping blood.’

And Le Chiffre smiles at this. Its a wry smile. Maybe an appreciation of how he thinks, he is getting the upper hand of Bond. And in a way he is. Bond hasn’t laid a glove on Le Chiffre and we’re 83 minutes into the film.

Minute 84

After a wry smile from Le Chiffre, Bond goes upstairs to the room. We assume the game has paused for the evening. Bond spots a smashed glass on the table. And I wonder what the pay off for this is. Does Bond think Vesper has used the glass to commit suicide. Or just that she is distressed? Why does there need to be a broken glass in the room? He could just walk in, hear the shower. I think its a bit of misdirection for the audience. To have the audience concerned for Vesper. Of course we see how shaken Vesper is and Bond slips into the shower with her.
