Episode 79
This week on the There Will Be Bond Podcast Rob Smith and I discuss the minutes 95&96 of Casino Royale.
Bond has been poisoned by Valenka (portrayed by Yugoslavian actress Ivana Miličević) and he runs to the bathroom, picking up a salt cellar and tumbler en route. He induces self vomiting before heading out to the Aston Martin parked outside the Casino (the Kaiserbad in Karlovy Vary). He plugs himself in to the headquarters back in London and Villiers informs M that Bond has been poisoned and he’s going into cardiac arrest.
Director of Photography Phil Mayeux says on the bLu Ray commentary
You have to make things clear. We’ve shown those two glasses in close makes you think something is going to happen here. The look on Le Chiffre’s face says he’s waiting for something to take place. Here I made the lighting less attractive to show that things were going on inside Bond’s head. We went to many ideas, (for the vomit scene) this was the first idea. Make the lights in the room so bright its painful to look at them, and the camera changes so much it gives you that feeling of wanting to vomit. I changed the shutter angle to 45 degrees makes it more pixelated, like a flash photograph.
New cufflinks
As reported on James Bond Lifestyle, Bond is wearing the S.T. Dupont palladium cufflinks in this scene, made exclusively for the film. These exclusive cufflinks come with a certificate which states that they are the exact reproduction of the cufflinks from the movie. The design of S.T. Dupont Bond accessories are inspired from the design of the Tuxedo he wears in the movie.
The original price was around $300, but the cufflinks have become extremely rare and valuable, and can fetch sometimes even more than $1000.
These are different to the cufflinks Bond wore earlier in the film when he was given his gun and car. Gaster wrote about these cufflinks in an earlier article.
