BLU RAY commentary
Now when he jumps into the Aston Martin and drives away , cars being reflective surfaces , in order to do the shot and not see a reflection of any of the camera or lights , it took a long time to like ,
gary powell stunt coordinator – you can’t help but get a huge smile across your face when you learn you’re going to get a brand new Aston Martin that no one has ever seen before. And also you’re going to crash it. But Martin said he didn’t want a big chase , he wanted to the audience to think there would be a big car chase, and just as your sitting in your seat getting ready for it there will be a crash bang wallop it’s over – he said I want a spectacular crash and I want it for real in one shot.
So I looked on the internet and I watched quite a lot of the world rally championships, and they always do have some big crashes when they go off the course. I found a couple, showed them to Martin and he said that’s exactly what I want.
We had a few test cars and the original plan was that we were going to hit a very low ramp about 8 inches at 7om mph. With the test cars we used it worked perfectly well. But when we tried it with the Aston Martin it hit the ramp, went through the air , straightened up and came back down on all four wheels.
We had a few test cars on the night, and a cannon as backup on the underside car that Chris Corbould put in.

Reddit Thread
The record held by the Aston Martin specifically names a cannon roll, which is an intended stunt maneuver. The record is held by this car and stuntman Adam Kirley as it was a designed stunt that went way better than they expected.
I think I’m right in saying that Adam was not only driving the hero car for the Milbrook roll, but also the chasing bad guy Jag (because editing) and is also the guy who pulls Bond out of the Aston.
Interesting take on why Le Chiffre says to Bond, I’m afraid your friend Mathis is really my friend Mathis can be found on this Reddit thread.
I think it was to keep up appearances, since Le Chiffre wanted to torture Bond into giving him the bank account password by physically torturing him as well as convincing him that Vesper’s life was on the line.
In reality they were working together from the beginning to sabotage the mission. She told Le Chiffre that James knew about his tell which helped him knock James out of the game.
After James returned to the game and defeated Le Chiffre, depriving him, and by proxy Quantum, of the winnings, Vesper and Le Chiffre staged a false kidnapping so they could lure James to a secluded location, capture him, and torture him for the password to the bank account the money was wired into.
Le Chiffre just fed the line about Mathis to keep the lie going and keep suspicions off of Vesper, since what they were going to do next hinged on James caring enough for Vesper to give up the password.
